National Cadet Corps
The National Cadet Corps (NCC) strives to cultivate qualities such as character, courage, comradeship, discipline, leadership, a secular outlook, a spirit of adventure, sportsmanship, and selfless service among the youth of India. It provides an enabling environment that inspires and motivates young individuals to explore careers in the Armed Forces. The NCC aims to shape disciplined, responsible, and service-oriented citizens by nurturing leadership, unity, social awareness, and a commitment to national development.
NCC History
The NCC in India was established under the National Cadet Corps Act of 1948 and was formally raised on July 15, 1948. It evolved from the University Officers Training Corps (UOTC), created by the British in 1942. However, the UOTC failed to meet wartime expectations during World War II, leading to the realization that a more effective peacetime training system was necessary to prepare young men for national service. A committee chaired by Pandit H. N. Kunzru recommended the creation of a nationwide cadet organization in schools and universities. Following this, the Governor General approved the NCC Act, and on July 15, 1948, the National Cadet Corps officially came into existence.
NCC at St. Joseph's
-
With strong instruction and a spirit of selfless service, the NCC unit at St. Joseph’s inspires its students. The training builds national pride, teamwork, and overall personal development. Its aim is to nurture motivated, disciplined, and skilled young individuals who can lead the nation in any career they choose. The unit is efficiently guided by Dr. B. Babu Manoharan (Chairman), Dr. Vaddi Seshagiri Rao (Principal) and Lieutenant Sreekanth R (Associate NCC Officer), at St. Joseph’s College of Engineering.
-
Our unit consists of 52 cadets—Twenty Eight SDs (Senior Division) and Twenty Four SWs (Senior Wing). We work together with unity and discipline, staying true to the NCC motto. Cadets attend four parade sessions every week.
-
The enduring legacy of the NCC is reflected in the remarkable achievements of its cadets. A total of 13 cadets participated in the Inter Group Competition of the Thal Sainik Camp and Republic Day Camp, of whom three advanced to the All India Thal Sainik Camp through their excellence. Likewise, three cadets were selected for the Idea and Innovation Competition, with one cadet chosen to present at the All India Idea and Innovation Competition. Additionally, one cadet earned selection to the Marina Republic Day Camp, another was selected for the SNIC, and one cadet has currently achieved the prestigious selection to the All India Republic Day Camp and to march in the honourable Kartavya Path. These accomplishments underscore the NCC’s continued role in nurturing disciplined, capable, and nationally committed youth.
-
Physical Training: Cadets begin their day with a refreshing one-hour morning fitness session. This helps build stamina, muscle strength, and core power.
-
Drill: Drill is one of the most exciting experiences for NCC cadets. Held once every week in the evening, this session helps cadets sharpen their drill performance and leadership skills.
-
Theory class: Along with physical training, cadets are taught the major components of NCC such as obstacle training, judging distance, map reading, leadership, weapons, military structure, national integration, health, and hygiene. These sessions help cadets gain practical knowledge, understand their environment better, and build strong confidence.
Aims of NCC

NCC Vision
- The vision of the National Cadet Corps (NCC) is to empower the youth of the country to become disciplined, patriotic, and socially responsible citizens. NCC aims to mold young individuals into future leaders with strong character, a spirit of service, and a commitment to national development and unity.
NCC Mission
- To develop character, discipline, leadership, and a spirit of service among the youth.
- To create a sense of unity and responsibility through training, teamwork, and community service.
- To prepare youth to handle emergencies, challenges, and national duties with courage and commitment.
Basic Training
- Cadets must be made to understand the aim and purpose of teaching drill, so that they are suitably motivated and do not take it as "fatigue". Emphasis will be laid on correct bearing, marching, saluting and arms drill. Inter-squad competitions may be organized to create interest.
- Cadets generally take keen interest in weapon training and firing. Units must liaise with nearby Service and Para-Military Units to ensure that all cadets get an opportunity to fire their authorized AMN (Admiralty Manual of Navigation). Use of firing simulators may be made to optimize training efforts where possible.
- Adventure activities have been incorporated in NCC training with the aim of inculcating and strengthening leadership traits amongst the cadets. These activities in NCC can be broadly divided into the following. 1.Land based - Mountaineering, Rock Climbing, Trekking. 2.Water based - Sailing Expedition, White Water Rafting, Scuba Diving, River Crossing. 3.Air based - Parasailing.
- This is a very important activity. It is done to increase international understanding and bolster awareness. These exchanges are done with NCC community of 10 countries namely Australia, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Canada, Maldives, Nepal, Singapore, UK, Russia and Vietnam at international level.
- All OC Units are keeping a check of Institutional training regularly to ensure proper attendance. Attendance registers are marked before the commencement of the parade and NOT repeat NOT after the parade.
- All DDG's are putting an effective monitoring mechanism which is in place to check attendance and conduct of this training.
